THE INFLUENCE OF EUROPEAN DESIGN ON INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS IN LODZ IN THE CONTEXR OF RECENT RESEARCH

BARTOSZ M. WALCZAK

The paper deals with cotton mills built from 1870 in Lodz – this was the period preceding the city’s industrial development. The comparative analysis of selected industrial buildings in Lodz with other textile centres in Germany and Britain demonstrated numerous similarities. This suggests that at the beginning of industrialisation in Lodz, technology transfer included not only the production knowledge and skills but also architectural solutions. The earliest mills were executed to the designs in Saxony and England. Probably the only necessary adjustments to meet local requirements were done in Lodz. The example of the Scheibler mill at “Księży Młyn” indicated that there is potential to trace the names of architects responsible for designs of the most important mills in Lodz despite the missing data in the local archives.
