FUNCTIONAL TOPICS AND SOLUTIONS IN THE WORKS OF WARSAW ARCHITECT JULIAN ANKIEWICZ

Architects beginning their professional career before the first half of the 19th century and operating in the third quarter of that century addressed various functional issues. The phenomena of professional specialisation in architecture, particularly indicated in the 19th century, started to develop only at the end of the second half of the 19th century. The output of Julian Ankiewicz, who designed residential buildings, public utility facilities, and also industrial and sacral buildings, is representative for this period in the Warsaw architecture.
The variety of functional topics tackled by Julian Ankiewicz is great evidence demonstrating the multidimensional skills of an architect professionally active up to the eighties of the 19th century. The necessity to comply with various investor requirements demanded vast knowledge and professional competence. Lack of detailed standards in reference to individual types of construction was a facility here – specific standards, both in reference to residential, office or industrial construction, were only developing. This allowed the architects operating in the époque of Ankiewicz for some freedom in solving sections of buildings, and an individual approach to issues of functionality and convenience.
