ABSTRACT

The parcelling out of the ZÄ…bki landed estate according to Tadeusz ToÅ‚wiÅ„ski’s innovative urban plan of 1912 could have resulted in the best example of a garden-city in Poland. The outbreak of World War I and a misguided spatial policy in the subsequent years halted the plan’s further implementation. ZÄ…bki’s proximity to the capital city has in recent years led to its rapid development, exposing it to great urbanization pressure. Unfortunate planning decisions, not respecting the cultural assets of this area, have led to spatial degradation of the town’s historic urban concept. Certain historic spots, elements of the urban solutions envisaged in the parcellation plan, can still be found in the town of ZÄ…bki. In order to preserve them for the future generations, urgent action is needed to restore their former character.
