REVIEW OF THE BOOK BY EDWARD DÄBROWSKI âEARLY MEDIEVAL DEFENCE SYSTEM OF KROSNO ODRZAĊSKIE IN THE LIGHT OF THE FIELD RESEARCH IN COMPARISON WITH THE THIETMAR CHRONICLESâ. KROSNO ODRZAĊSKIE 2009
ZYGMUNT ĊWIECHOWSKI
The book of Edward DÄ
browski, archaeologist, presents the results of the defence system examination of the KroĊnieĊska City Gate, located in the Lubuska Land, and covering three towns: Krosno OdrzaĊskie, PoĊupin and Gostchorze. This complex played a vital role in repelling the attacks of the German emperor Henry II in 1005 and 1009-10 by King BolesĊaw Chrobry. The struggle of both sovereigns was described in Thietmarâs Chronicle. The chronicle, together with archaeological and topographical research, helped the author to reconstruct the defensive systems and make historical specifications.
