WERE CISTERCIANS FROM OLIWA A CONSERVATIVE ORDER?

HANNA KOZACZEWSKA-GOLASZ

The book Architecture of post-Cistercian church in Oliwa from XII to XX century. Monastic church of the white monks, written by Aleksander Piwko, was published in Pelplin in 2006. It has a carefully thought layout and introduces many new elements regarding the church in Oliwa and its connections with Polish and European architecture. The text is complemented by drawings and carefully edited notes thanks to which the reader become familiarised with the standpoints and dating of other researchers.
The properly presented chronology of the church construction and reconstructions is based on long-term research conducted by the author. Late dating raise concerns. We do not find reasons for the Cistercians using ā€˛traditional" Romanesque forms for several generations of architects until the first quarter of the XIV century in the book.
