CREATION OR ALGORITHM? SHORT REFLECTION ON FORMALIZED ART
IN THE PAST AND PRESENT

JAN SŁYK

Rapid growth of computer science brings experiments that evoke the reflection on formalized art and its origin. David Cope's musical compositions and Jose Duarte's architectural designs introduce new horizon of automotive creation. While attention to the new art growths, the question about realism and originality appears. Is human being still the central point of creation process ?
The paper describes structural analysis on musical and architectural composition. On the base of history study, strengths and weaknesses of formalization are enlightened. The research regards discovering rules from databases of existing art paradigms. Basic algorithm characteristics are illustrated that helps to investigate their usability on the field of art. Musical and architectural experiences brought together allow to compare and to learn universal and specific aspects.
The study aims to establish typology of theory subjects and practical examples of algorithm implementation. Author explores the subject from architectural perspective. Conclusions are based on that background but hopefully can be useful for musicologists as well.
