The historical atlas of Cracow prepared by a 20-strong team of authors headed by Zdzisław Noga belongs to a series of European publications developed in accordance with International Commission of History of Towns. The textual part consists of a comprehensive and detailed discussion regarding the transformation of an early medieval settling complex into a town located on a regular plan, the development and evolution of the centre into a royal town, and the transformation process of this centre into a modern town in the 19th and 20th centuries. The authors’ articles are illustrated with numerous reconstruction boards and a unique collection of historical reproductions of the plans of Cracow. The size of the Cracow atlas and level of details of analysis presented therein means that it goes beyond schemas adopted for this type of publications, both regarding the textual and illustrative layers, it sets a new standard.
